Beyoncé and Jay-Z have a long history of supporting the LGBTQ movement and often times promote these ideologies through their music and art. On Jay-Z’s latest solo project “4:44” which was released in 2017, Jay-Z closes the album with a song titled “Smile” which details his struggle with accepting the fact that his mom who had just recently came out as a lesbian was gay. Jay-Z’s mother Gloria actually received a GLAAD award in 2018 due to her advocacy and support of the LGBTQ movement. On March 28th, Jay-Z and Beyoncé attended the 30th annual GLAAD Media Awards which was held at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
LGBTQ Family Members
Both Jay-Z and Beyoncé have ties to the LGBTQ community that reach far beyond the political and entertainment arena. Beyoncé has a gay uncle who she calls Johnny who has been an openly gay man ever since Beyoncé was a little girl. During her acceptance speech, Beyoncé gives a shout out to her now deceased uncle stating how much of an integral role he played in raising her and her sister.
Jay-Z also makes mention of his mother who recently came out as a lesbian during his acceptance speech. Jay-Z talks about the major influence that his mother played in his life, helping him become the man that he is today. Both superstars rightfully deserve the Vanguard Award that they were presented with due to their unwavering dedication and sincere feeling towards the LGBTQ community.
History of LGBTQ Advocacy
During 2011 and 2012 Jay-Z and Beyoncé were very active in pushing forward the agenda for gay marriage rights in all 50 states which was a movement largely spearheaded by the Obama administration. The superstar couple also made mention of how heartwarming it is to see LGBTQ members and heterosexual people having a good time and respecting each other when they come to the couple’s joint concerts.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z are very beneficial figures for the LGBTQ movement to have on their side. Aside from the enormous reach of their influence, Jay-Z and Beyoncé possess the economic means necessary to help push the LGBTQ movement forward through their various initiatives. With such a long history showing support for the LGBTQ community, we can only expect more support from Jay-Z and Beyoncé to the LGBTQ community in the future.
Love for all
Even if you’re not gay and don’t identify with any of the principles set forth by the LGBTQ community, there is still a very valuable lesson to be learned. Like many great people have said throughout history, judging an individual based on how they treat others should be the sole measure by which we as humans decide who is good and evil.
The LGBTQ movement proves that love wins always and no matter how hard things may seem at the moment they always get better in the end. Jay-Z and Beyoncé deserve the Vanguard award they just received last week and the world is excited to see how they will continue to support the LGBTQ community.
