News broke Sunday evening that rap superstar, community activist and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle had been shot directly in front of his “The Marathon Store” retail location in Los Angeles near the infamous Crenshaw and Slauson intersection. Initial reports claimed that the 33 year old rapper had been shot 6 times and was in critical condition. Shortly after the news of Nipsey Hussle being shot was leaked, a video surfaced of the aftermath showing paramedics trying to revive the non-responsive superstar. Nipsey Hussle was then rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m., leaving behind two children and a fiancé.
After a two-day manhunt, sheriff’s deputies arrested a man named Eric Holder without incident in the city of Bellflower. Holder, a 29-year old resident of the same Los Angeles area, was believed to have known the victim. Although both men had gang affiliations, the motive for the tragic shooting has been said to have been personal and not related to gang activity.
Nipsey Hustle’s passion for music
Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was well-known for his reality-inspired lyrics about the obstacles he faced while growing up as a youth in one of Los Angeles’s most violent neighborhoods. Nipsey Hussle’s life story was always a part of his music which is what contributed to him having such a loyal and strong fanbase. Nipsey Hussle has a rather extensive catalog of music dating back to 2009 up until his first studio album titled Victory Lap for which he received a Grammy nomination in 2019.With the passing of the respected rapper fresh on many of old and new fans’ minds, sales of his music increased a whopping 3000% across multiple platforms. Nipsey Hussle had a very deep passion for music as he expressed in many interviews that it allowed him to overcome the various obstacles which he faced in life.
Dedication to the community
Aside from music, Nipsey Hussle was very involved in his local community around the Los Angeles area. Nipsey Hussle opened the very first smart technology clothing store in his South Central, Los Angeles neighborhood to provide an opportunity to the underprivileged youth in the area. He was so dedicated to protecting the youth in his neighborhood that he requested a meeting with the LAPD to discuss ways to stop gang violence. The meeting was scheduled to happen on Monday – the day after his murder.
Nipsey also owned a strip mall near the same area as his Marathon clothing store and rented out available office spaces to aspiring entrepreneurs. The now slain rapper had an intense dedication to community service and always participated in local charity events whenever he could. His passion for the community and dedication to helping people also makes his passing that much more difficult for those who knew him personally.
