Ice Cube and Magic Johnson Working Together to Buy Sports Networks From Disney

Ice Cube is arguably one of the first rappers to successfully expand his career far passed music. After locking down success in the rap industry, Cube ventured into acting and film-making where he has been equally, if not more, successful. Most notably known for being a part of popular 90’s rap group NWA and starring in and producing several hit movies, including cult classics like Friday and Boyz n The Hood, Ice Cube has now taken his talents to the very lucrative sports industry.  Big3, his own 3-on-3 basketball league has been gaining popularity and recognition which has led Cube to his endeavor.  He just announced that he has partnered with another legend, Magic Johnson, to acquire 21 regional Sports networks from The Walt Disney Co. Soon after Johnson recently announced that he would be stepping down as President of Basketball Operations of the LA Lakers, he announced that he will be joining Cube to enter a bid to purchase the networks.

What Magic Johnson Brings To The Table

Magic Johnson is a well-respected NBA legend, turned businessman, who has accomplished a lot throughout his career as, both, an athlete, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. Now that Magic Johnson is a part of the bidding team for Ice Cube’s active Disney acquisition, the odds of the deal going through have significantly increased. Disney’s regional sports networks have received offers in excess of $10B, all from very reputable corporations, including Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., Big3, and Liberty Media Corp. “Very happy to add Magic Johnson to our bidding group for Disney’s RSNs,” Ice Cube said in a tweet.

While specific details surrounding exactly how much involvement Magic Johnson will have in the acquisition have yet to be released, he’ll definitely be able to commit lots of time to the effort given the fact that he’s no longer President of the Lakers. If the acquisition efforts are successful, Ice Cube’s media company plans to air exclusive content from celebrity figures like Serena Williams and Snoop Dogg across the networks.

Ice Cube is competing against some heavyweight media giants in his efforts to obtain the sports networks. Magic Johnson is definitely a welcomed figure who can add tons of real value to the proposal.
