The Fascinating Story of Yasuke

The film will star Chadwick Boseman playing the lead role of Yasuke who was a very famous black warrior in Japanese history. Geoffrey Girard & Thomas Lockley wrote the biography “African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan” which details critical moments in the life of Yasuke and how he became the legend that he is today. According to the biography, Yasuke was taken from his native village located near the Nile by slavers and he was sent to India to serve the Portuguese.

In 1579, Yasuke arrived in Japan as an indentured valet and bodyguard for a powerful Portuguese Jesuit missionary named Alessandro Valignano. Alessandro Valignano wanted to gain the favor of powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga and gave Nobunaga ownership of Yasuke as a “weapon bearer and novelty.” Eventually, Yasuke went on to prove his abilities which led to Nobunaga awarding him the title of Samurai and he became known as being a valiant and mighty fighter.

The writers of the biography about Yasuke stated that “People in the streets did not only gape at him, they bowed heads to the earth as they addressed him.” This gives some insight into just how revered Yasuke was in his home village which adds novelty to the upcoming film.
