The “Golden Girls” Classic TV Sitcom Gets A Reboot With Black Actors

A new reboot episode of the classic “Golden Girls” TV series will be streamed on Zoom this upcoming Tuesday, but there’s a twist. This episode features an all-Black cast of prominent female actors. The actresses involved took to Instagram to speak on the new series and share details about the upcoming show.

Tracee Ellis Ross will be reprising the role of Rose Nylund, originally played by Betty White. Regina King is cast to play Dorothy Zbornak while Alfre Wooodard will play the character of her mother, Sophia Petrillo. Sanaa Lathan is slated to play Blanche Nevereaux.

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood and host Lena Waithe also took to Instagram to make their announcements. The “Golden Girls” reboot episode will be a part of Zoom’s “Zoom Where it Happens” series taking place on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET/PT and 8 p.m. CT.

What it means

On its official event page, “Zoom Where It Happens” encourages its users to indulge in an evening “that takes a look back to the sitcoms of yesteryear — before you could pause your screens or binge-watch.”

The site also announced that the first episode will be spotlighting and supporting Color of Change — the nation’s largest online racial justice organization.  Users can join the virtual watch party on the platform’s page, but should take note they will be prompted to sign up to receive messages to “make a change during the upcoming election.”

This nostalgic “Golden Girls” episode will be the first original TV sitcom reboot to hit the virtual Zoom platform.  Various other TV sitcom reboots are in the works, however, further information has yet to be released. During a time of rising racial tension all over the world, the new take on the original “Golden Girls” classic will definitely be compelling to watch.

What to expect

The original “Golden Girls” TV sitcom aired on television from 1985-1992 starring famous actresses Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan.  Paying homage to their predecessors, the new Black sitcom cast posted behind the scenes photos on Instagram to build anticipation for the new series.

If you were a fan of the original “Golden Girls” or are interested in finding out what this new episode will bring, be sure to tune in on Zoom this upcoming Tuesday when it hits the air.
