Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion Just Released Their Collaborative Single Titled “WAP”

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion recently dropped their highly anticipated collaboration titled “WAP.” The meaning of this acronym is one we won’t elaborate on, however, if you listen to the song you will quickly find out what it means.

The single was officially released on August, 7th accompanied by a Livestream that Cardi B did on YouTube prior to its release. WAP signals the first time that Megan Thee Stallion has collaborated on a track with Cardi B.

One of the primary things that surprised many people was the fact the Megan Thee Stallion chose to do a song with Cardi B. This is because just last year, Megan Thee Stallion collaborated with another huge female artist in Nick Minaj for her single “Hot Girl Summer” which also featured fellow rapper Ty Dolla Sign.

What it means for female rappers

In an age where minority populations are being empowered at levels unprecedented before, having a Dominican female artist and an African American female artist on a song together sends a huge message. Race aside, the fact that two of the biggest female artists in the rap industry decided to do a song together speaks volumes about how far the competitive nature of the industry has come.

In the early days of rap, female rappers were all about unity as they all faced many of the same challenges in a male-dominated industry. Artists like Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Da Brat have numerous collaborative efforts together which put a spotlight on female empowerment and unity. Fast forward to the early 2000s era when artists like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown were popular, it was easy to see a separation from the “female unity” theme that artist before them fostered.

This period in female rap saw many feuds and rivalries between female artists who were all seeking to be at the “top” of the industry. Now a days, we see female artists moving away from the competitive nature of the industry as many are beginning to foster message of female unity much like the ones who helped create a lane for female rappers in the rap industry to begin with.

Moving forward

The official music video for “WAP by Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion is available to watch on YouTube, but it’s age restricted so you’ll need to login. “WAP” marks Cardi B’s first official release of 2020 and the second follow-up single for Megan Thee Stallion after releasing “Savage” off of her debut album titled “Sugar.”

Fans of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have shown overwhelming support for the song, which is good news since Megan was recently involved in a shooting accident which now has her recovering from gunshot wounds. If “WAP” is any indication of what can expect to see in the near-future from both of these artists, we’re really excited.
