New “Fresh Prince” Reboot Coming To NBC’s Peacock Streaming Service

The “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” is getting a reboot on its original station, NBC. “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” star Will Smith made an announcement on his YouTube channel this past Tuesday, revealing that the reboot of the ’90s classic will premiere on NBCs streaming platform entitled Peacock.

Via video conference, Will Smith happily stated, “We have just officially closed the deal with Peacock with an unprecedented two-season order from a pitch. I’ve been in this business for 30 years, and that does not happen.”

Other integral figures to the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reboot including director/writer Morgan Cooper were also in attendance. Cooper shared a four-minute spec trailer reimagining the original comedy starring Will Smith as a drama.

The original “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” show aired from 1990-1996, but when Cooper’s clip was first posted to YouTube in March 2019, Will found the piece “brilliant.”

What it means

Since then, the revamped trailer has garnered an astonishing 6 million views on the video-sharing platform. The new “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” series will simply be titled “Bel-Air,” a nod to the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood where the show is set.

Peacock shared its vision of the upcoming series in an official press release.  “With a reimagined vision, ‘Bel-Air’ will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions, and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show.”

Will Smith has expressed tremendous levels of excitement about seeing his sitcom being given a modernized plot twist. In a statement, he reflected on how the original sitcom’s characters would be interesting to see in a contemporary landscape.  “The Carlton character — a Black, young Republican, modern-day?  The heat that will be stirred up between these characters. It’s like, ‘What’s the Hilary character in a world of Instagram and social media?” he elaborated.

As executive director of “Bel-Air,” Will Smith has also promised a reunion coming to the HBO Max platform with “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”‘s original cast.

What to expect

It will be interesting to see how the dynamic of the original “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” cast plays out. Though former star James Avery (who played Uncle Phil) passed away, the other original cast members will definitely be able to coach the new actors on how to keep their roles authentic to is predecessor.

If you’re interested in watching “Bel-Air,’ you’ll need to sign up for an account with NBC’s Peacock streaming service. Stay tuned for an official release date announcement soon.
