Presidential Candidate Joe Biden Chooses Kamala Harris As His VP

Joe Biden Chooses Kamala Harris As His Vice President

Joe Biden recently announced his choice for VP as the 2020 presidential election draws closer. Senator Kamala Harris is Joe Biden’s Vice President running mate pick for the 2020 U.S. presidential election and politicians on both sides have mixed feelings. The relationship between Kamala Harris and Joe Biden is very interesting as Kamala Harris also had a presidential bid in which she had some rather harsh words for the former Vice President.

Upon the collapse of her presidential run, Kamala Harris began endorsing Joe Biden for the primary presidential candidate. Kamala Harris became an outspoken supporter of Racial Justice legislation after the tragic killing of George Floyd in Minnesota this past May.

Aside from all the controversy surrounding the new VP pick, Kamala Harris is making history as the first black woman to be nominated for national office by a major political party. Kamala Harris, 55 years old, is also the first person of Indian descent to be nominated for a national office.

What it means

Kamala Harris is only the 4th woman in United States history to be selected for a presidential ticket. Kamala Harris brings a certain intensity to this year’s presidential race, she is one of the few politicians that are able to capture and capitalize off of the raw political energy gained through large public speaking events like debates.

Kamala Harris is able to connect with a specific portion of Biden’s demographic that even he may not be able to connect with fully. Given her storied and culturally diverse beginnings in addition to her fight to get where she’s at today, she is a truly inspirational figure that many minorities can relate to.

On this same basis, many people are giving Joe Biden the side-eye as he recently made some rather disparaging comments about the African-American community in one of his remote interviews. Immediately after, he announced Kamala Harris as his VP pick which some see as nothing more than political pandering.

Joe Biden made the announcement via a series of emails and text messages to his supporters which stated: “Joe Biden here. Big news: I’ve chosen Kamala Harris as my running mate. Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump” The first appearance the new pair are scheduled to make is next Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware.

What to expect

By choosing Kamala Harris, Joe Biden is signaling that in 4-8 years, it’s very likely she will become the default face of the Democratic Party.  Kamla Harris has a long and storied history as a rather controversial California prosecutor which made her a rather safe choice for Joe Biden. Kamala Harris has always been a formidable supporter of the democratic party, so it will be interesting to see how things progress as the presidential race continues to grow.
