The Minnesota Timberwolves Secure Top Pick in 2020 NBA draft lottery

The 2020 NBA draft lottery happened last Thursday and many teams walked away with some nice picks on their roster. The Minnesota Timberwolves in particular won the 2020 NBA draft lottery and gained rights to the first pick in the draft. This is big for the Timberwolves as they ended the 2019 NBA season with the third-worst record in the entire league.

Gerson Rosas who is the president of basketball operations for the Timberwolves said the following in a statement: “There’s a lot of steps left in this journey for us, but today was a significant one, We’re excited about the potential level of player that we can add to our organization, but at the same time, we are going to be very aggressive and look at every avenue to improve this team. We have two young stars in Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell that we’re building this together [with]. We’ve got a great young core that’s young and being one of the youngest, if not the youngest, team in the NBA. We have a lot of upside.”

What it means

It’s good to see that the president of operations for the team is excited about this year’s upcoming season as the team undoubtedly has a lot to prove. The Golden State Warriors ended last year’s season with the worst record which is ironic, because both the Timberwolves and Warriors were the last two teams to receive their picks on Thursday.

Rosas continued his statement by saying the following: “But this allows us to take a major step in talent acquisition, whether it’s in the draft or the trade market, whatever the case may be. It really positions us well moving forward.”

The Timberwolves and Warriors made history with a huge trade at this year’s deadline. The Golden State Warriors drafted Russell Wilson for Andrew Wiggins in addition to a top-three protected first-round pick in the next draft.

This is also the first time the Timberwolves will have a first-round draft pick since their 2015 trade of Towns. Continuing on his previous statements, president of operations Rosas went on to say: “That’s why we brought D’Angelo here, he’s one of the faces of our organization, and he’s a closer, as he showed tonight. We’re excited.”

He continued with the following: “This is what it’s all about. We’re building this the right way, step by step. We want to make sure we do things the right way, and the opportunity … you want to be in a situation where hard work meets opportunity and you catch a break like this, and that’s where we are at tonight.”

What to expect

The Timberwolves and their biggest rival the Golden State Warriors are in two completely separate places as basketball teams. The Warriors have three championships under their belt and have made it to five NBA finals. The Timberwolves on the other hand are just beginning to develop their roster in hopes of climbing higher in the league.

It’ll be interesting to see how the new additions to the team make a difference in the upcoming season.
